Is SMM the most important InBody number?
It is one of the key numbers when muscle is your topic, but not enough alone. Read it with weight, fat, segments, water, history and real training or function.
Skeletal muscle mass (SMM) on InBody is an estimate of your kilograms of skeletal muscle, and it is most useful when read together with body weight, fat, body water, segments and history rather than as one isolated number. One measurement shows a rough snapshot; a repeated trend under similar conditions tells you far more.

SMM means skeletal muscle mass. It estimates the muscle component connected with movement and posture. It is one of the key values when you care about training, fat loss, body shape or preserving muscle over time.
The value is most useful next to body weight and fat mass. Two people can weigh the same, but one may carry more skeletal muscle and less fat, while the other has a weaker muscle-to-fat picture.
SMM is still an estimate from bioimpedance, not a direct weighing of pure muscle. Hydration and current body state can influence it, so trend is more important than one isolated reading.
The segmental part splits the body into right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg and left leg. It helps you see distribution, not just one total number.
The wording needs care: segmental lean analysis does not show isolated pure muscle in each arm or leg. It mainly shows fat-free mass in the segment, which includes water and other non-fat components.
Practically, segments help when you care about asymmetry, return after a break, right-left differences or whether the change appears where you expected it.
Muscle tissue is closely connected with water. Hydration, glycogen stores, carbohydrate and salt intake, recent training load, illness or inflammation after exercise can all change how bioimpedance estimates fat-free and muscle-related mass.
That does not make the result wrong. It means one visit is a snapshot of a specific day. To read muscle mass fairly, you need to know whether conditions were similar to the previous visit.
Be especially careful after heavy training, alcohol, sauna, illness, poor sleep, travel or visible water retention.
A real trend does not come from one higher or lower value. It comes from repeated measurements on the same type of device, under similar conditions and at a sensible interval.
A clearer muscle trend usually means SMM is repeatedly stable or rising, fat behaves reasonably, segments make sense for the training and water values do not explain the whole change.
For each visit, note training, food, alcohol, illness, travel, menstruation, sleep or any major routine change. These notes often explain the result better than the number alone.
Muscle mass is structural. Strength is functional: how your nervous system, muscles, technique and current state produce force.
Strength can improve before muscle mass visibly rises because of coordination and training adaptation. Muscle mass can also look reasonable while functional strength is lower after illness, inactivity, fatigue, pain or with older age.
If you want a more practical view of muscle capacity, read InBody next to training history, real function and, when useful, grip strength from InGrip.

FAQ
It is one of the key numbers when muscle is your topic, but not enough alone. Read it with weight, fat, segments, water, history and real training or function.
Not always. Repeated trend under similar conditions is stronger. A one-time rise can partly reflect water, glycogen, training or different preparation.
Read them mainly as fat-free mass in each segment, not isolated pure muscle. They are useful for distribution, asymmetry and trend.
Yes. Strength also depends on the nervous system, technique, pain, fatigue, recovery, illness and experience with the movement.
On InBody 970 / 970S, SMM is most useful next to segments, water, fat, history and real strength. That is how you separate a muscle trend from one noisy day.
