Value comparison

Visceral vs. subcutaneous fat

Short answer

Percent body fat tells you how much fat you carry in total, while visceral fat area and level describe the part of it stored in the abdominal cavity around your organs.

How it is producedEstimated from the impedance measurement; the catalogue explicitly says "estimated area". With a connected Yscope the abdominal analysis is more precise.Derived from visceral fat area: one level corresponds to roughly 10 cm².Calculated: PBF = (fat mass / weight) × 100.

What it cannot tell youIt cannot determine health status or replace CT, and it does not quantify subcutaneous fat separately.Rounding to tens of cm² makes it coarser than the area, so a small shift may not show at all.It cannot say where the fat is — the same percentage can be subcutaneous or abdominal.

When the values diverge

  • High total fat, normal visceral fat: the fat is stored mostly under the skin, typically on hips and thighs. The percentage is above the range while visceral fat area stays under 100 cm².
  • Normal total fat, visceral fat above the threshold: a slim build with abdominal fat storage — a pattern the percentage alone will never reveal.
  • With age the manual notes that visceral fat rises even at the same total fat percentage, which is why the chart plots the distribution by age.
  • During weight loss both values fall, but not at the same pace, so what matters is the trend rather than one measurement.

The most common wrong conclusion

Reading visceral fat as a diagnosis. The manufacturer describes visceral fat area as an estimated cross-sectional area, not a measurement; the gold standard is CT. It is meant for tracking a trend, not for determining health status.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does InBody report subcutaneous fat separately?

The standard body composition sheet does not print a separate subcutaneous fat area in cm². The difference between total fat and its visceral part is read from percent body fat together with visceral fat area, and the segmental fat analysis adds the distribution across body parts.

Why is my body fat percentage low but visceral fat above the threshold?

Because the total percentage says nothing about storage. Some people store fat mostly in the abdominal cavity, others under the skin. That difference is exactly why InBody reports the two values separately.

Is visceral fat level more precise than the area?

No, it is the same quantity at a coarser resolution: one level is about 10 cm². For tracking change over time the area in cm² is the better value; the level is there for quick orientation.
