Visceral Fat Area estimates how much space fat stored around the internal organs would occupy in a cross-section of the abdomen; it is given in cm².

Short answer

VFA estimates how much space fat around the organs would occupy in a cross-section of the abdomen. Treat the 100 cm² threshold as a manufacturer orientation point rather than a verdict, and decide from the trend across several measurements together with waist circumference.

What the value represents

Abdominal fat has two parts. Subcutaneous fat lies between skin and muscle and can be pinched. Visceral fat sits inside the abdominal cavity between organs and cannot be pinched. VFA describes only the second one.

The number is an area, not a mass and not a volume. Picture a horizontal cross-section of the abdomen roughly at navel level; VFA estimates how many cm² of that section would be visceral fat.

InBody cannot see inside the abdomen. It estimates the area from bioimpedance, that is from how a weak alternating current passes through the body. The manufacturer manual therefore labels it an estimate and names CT as the reference method for actually measuring it.

Two people of the same weight and the same percent body fat can have markedly different VFA, because they differ in where they store fat. That is precisely the information weight, BMI and percent body fat do not carry.

How the value is produced

  • An estimated value. The manufacturer catalogue calls it an estimated area explicitly, not a direct measurement.
  • The input is impedance measured between the electrodes on hands and feet. From it the device derives body water, from water body composition, and from composition the visceral fat estimate. The manufacturer does not publish the equation.
  • With the optional Yscope module attached, the manufacturer says abdominal fat analysis is more accurate, because abdominal impedance and circumference are measured separately. Without it, the catalogue says results can differ.
  • Reference comparison: the shaded band of the chart on the result sheet shows the mean and standard deviation for a given age across 20 to 80 years from manufacturer data, with your position marked.

How to read the current value

  • The manual works with a threshold of 100 cm². Above it the device labels the value Over. That is a manufacturer boundary derived from its own data, not a diagnostic criterion.
  • The threshold is not a switch. There is no difference between 98 and 103 cm² that changes anything — a gap that size sits inside the uncertainty of the estimate.
  • The shaded band of the chart shows where the mean for your age lies. Visceral fat rises with age according to the manufacturer, so the same value carries different context at thirty than at sixty.
  • The value describes where fat is stored. It does not establish health status and does not set the risk of any particular disease for you personally.

How to read change over time

  • Visceral fat usually responds to changes in diet and activity sooner than total fat mass, but even so the horizon is months, not days.
  • Compare measurements under comparable conditions: fasted, at the same time of day, without training or sauna immediately beforehand. The estimate builds on body composition, so measurement conditions affect it exactly as they do the other values.
  • A difference of a few cm² between two measurements is not a reliable signal. Follow the direction across three or more measurements.
  • When VFA and waist circumference fall together, the picture is consistent. When only one value moves, give preference to what can be verified independently — waist circumference measured with a tape.

General principles: how to read change between measurements

What to read it with

  • Visceral Fat Level (VFL) – the same information on a coarser scale; the two values must agree.
  • Waist circumference and the waist-height ratio – a more independent view of abdominal fat.
  • Percent Body Fat and fat mass – the total amount VFA does not contain.
  • Skeletal Muscle Mass – during weight reduction it shows whether fat or muscle is being lost.
  • Weight and BMI – say whether a change in VFA is part of an overall change in weight or a redistribution within the same weight.

Common misunderstandings

  • VFA is not the amount of fat in kilograms or its volume. It is an estimated area in a single cross-section.
  • It is not an image of fat. The device cannot see inside the abdomen; it calculates the area from the electrical properties of the body.
  • A value above 100 cm² is not a diagnosis. InBody does not diagnose metabolic syndrome, diabetes or cardiovascular disease.
  • A visible belly need not be visceral fat. A large part of abdominal fat is subcutaneous and does not count towards VFA.
  • Visceral fat cannot be removed selectively with abdominal exercises. It responds to overall energy balance and regular activity.
  • A value from InBody and a value from CT or another device are not interchangeable.

What can affect the result short term

  • Food and drink shortly before the measurement; stomach contents count towards weight and towards body composition.
  • A full bladder — the manual recommends using the toilet beforehand.
  • Training, sauna and hot or cold showers shortly before, because they change perfusion and fluid distribution.
  • Hydration status generally, because the whole body composition estimate starts from body water.
  • Time of day: water shifts towards the lower half of the body during the day.
  • The menstrual cycle, during which fluid retention fluctuates.
  • The presence or absence of the Yscope module; without it the manufacturer says results can differ.

What to do next

The explanation of the value is the same for everyone. Only the suggested step changes — pick whichever fits you.

  • Record waist circumference measured with a tape at the same height alongside VFA. Two independent values are more dependable than one.
  • For following development, measure two to three months apart under the same conditions rather than after a week.
  • Work with overall energy balance and regular aerobic activity; for abdominal fat the manual mentions limiting alcohol and fatty food and eating regularly.
  • When the value stays high, discuss it with a doctor who also has your blood pressure and laboratory results. The device does not know those.

What the value does not determine

  • It does not diagnose metabolic syndrome, diabetes or cardiovascular disease.
  • It is not an imaging method; it is an estimate from bioimpedance, and the reference method is CT.
  • It says nothing about the amount of subcutaneous fat or about total fat mass.
  • The manufacturer internal validation study against DEXA did not cover visceral fat.
  • Absolute values are not comparable between different devices and methods.

On terminology

  • The manufacturer labels the band above the threshold Over. That is a device reference boundary, not a medical norm.
  • Visceral fat is not the same as abdominal fat as a whole — the latter also includes the subcutaneous layer.

When to discuss it with a professional

If the value stays high or worries you, discuss it with a doctor. Risk is assessed from several pieces of information the device does not have — blood pressure, blood sugar and lipid values, family history and lifestyle. The measurement itself does not establish a diagnosis.

Bioimpedance does not measure fat, and certainly not its location. It measures the resistance and reactance of tissue to alternating current; current passes through tissue high in water and ions, while fat tissue is a poor conductor. Body water is estimated from impedance, fat free mass from water, and fat appears as the difference against weight. Separating visceral from subcutaneous fat additionally requires a modelling assumption about how fat is distributed in the trunk region. This is why the manual labels VFA an estimate and names CT with a consistent section position — usually at the navel or the L4 to L5 lumbar vertebrae — as the method of actual measurement.

With the Yscope module, abdominal impedance and circumference are measured separately. The manufacturer catalogue reports a coefficient of determination R² of 0.862 for visceral fat area against CT and 0.967 for subcutaneous fat area. Explained variability is therefore noticeably lower for visceral fat than for subcutaneous fat — and these are values measured with Yscope connected. For a setup without Yscope the catalogue gives no corresponding correlation at all.

The manufacturer internal validation study against DEXA in 150 people covered fat free mass, fat mass and segmental lean mass. Visceral fat was not verified in it, and the document lists this among its own limitations. A conservative reading therefore runs: VFA is usable for following a trend in the same person on the same device, not as an absolute figure comparable with a clinical examination.

The health context is population-level, not individual. The manual links excess visceral fat with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hyperlipidaemia and insulin resistance; the WHO expert report on waist circumference and waist-hip ratio treats anthropometric indicators of fat distribution in a similar way. In every case these are relationships observed in groups. The NIH consensus statement on bioimpedance further emphasises standardised measurement conditions as a precondition for comparing repeated results, which applies to the visceral fat estimate exactly as it does to the other values.

Does a value above 100 cm² mean I have metabolic syndrome?

No. 100 cm² is the manufacturer threshold for labelling a value Over on the result sheet, not a diagnostic criterion. Metabolic syndrome is established from a combination of findings including blood pressure and laboratory values, which the device does not measure. Diagnosis belongs with a doctor.

I have a large belly but my VFA came out below 100 cm². How is that possible?

Much of the visible volume of the abdomen can be subcutaneous fat, which does not count towards VFA. The manual separates the two layers precisely because they behave differently. For a fuller picture, add waist circumference and percent body fat to VFA.

How quickly can visceral fat be reduced?

The manual gives no time frame and no recommended interval between measurements. In practice count on months and on changing overall energy balance and activity; targeted abdominal exercise does not remove fat from this area.

Is the InBody value the same as one from CT?

It is not. The manual names CT as the reference method, while InBody estimates the area from bioimpedance. Even with the Yscope module the catalogue reports a coefficient of determination R² of 0.862 for agreement with CT — a good relationship, but not an interchangeable one.

Why did I get a different value from last time when nothing changed?

The estimate builds on body composition, which fluctuates with hydration, food, training and time of day. This is why measuring under comparable conditions and deciding from the trend rather than a single difference is recommended.
