Is it better to track percent body fat or fat kilograms?
Track both. Fat kilograms show the estimated amount of fat, while percent body fat shows the ratio to total weight. Neither is enough without muscle, water and trend.
Percent body fat looks like one clear number, but it is only useful when you read it with context. On InBody, PBF should be interpreted next to body fat mass, skeletal muscle mass, body water, visceral fat and repeated measurements under similar conditions. A table can guide you, but it should not replace the whole picture.

Percent body fat tells what share of total body weight is estimated to be fat. That makes it useful, but also easy to misunderstand. The percentage can change because fat changed, but also because muscle, water or total weight changed.
That is why it should be read next to body fat mass in kilograms. During fat loss, the strongest story is usually lower fat mass while muscle mass stays reasonably stable. During muscle gain, PBF can stay similar or even fall while scale weight rises.
Without muscle mass and body water, percent body fat alone can invite too quick a conclusion.
Body fat ranges naturally differ by sex, age, height, build, training status and health context. Women usually have a higher physiological fat percentage than men, and the relationship between fat and fat-free mass often changes with age.
A table can be a useful first compass, but it must not override context. An athlete, a person returning after a long break, a woman in another cycle phase, an older adult or someone actively losing weight can all have the same PBF with a very different story.
A better question is whether the value makes sense next to the goal, muscle mass, waist, visceral fat and long-term trend.
InBody uses bioimpedance, so the result is not isolated fat weighing. The calculation depends on the electrical signal, body water and its distribution.
Hydration, a large meal, a full bladder, alcohol, hard training, sauna, a very different time of day, illness, travel, sleep and menstrual cycle phase can all affect the reading. For smaller differences, check conditions first rather than changing your whole routine in panic.
This does not make the result useless. It means small PBF differences are most meaningful when measured repeatedly under similar conditions.
PBF is most practical when it answers a specific question. During fat loss, you want to know whether fat is going down without unnecessary muscle loss. During muscle gain, you want to know whether weight is not rising mainly as fat.
Water matters because unusual water values can shift fat-free mass estimates and indirectly affect percentages. Visceral fat adds another layer because two people can have similar PBF but a different abdominal fat context.
For a healthier metabolic picture, PBF is weaker alone than in combination with fat mass, waist, visceral fat, muscle mass and, where relevant, blood pressure or lab values discussed with a doctor.
The table below shows orientation ranges for body fat percentage by sex and age, based on the widely cited Gallagher classification (Gallagher et al., 2000), as reproduced in peer-reviewed literature indexed on PubMed Central. In practice, the cutoffs vary depending on the measurement method (bioimpedance/InBody, calipers, DEXA) and the source used – treat them as a general orientation framework for comparison, not a diagnosis.
