Waist-Height Ratio (WHtR)
The waist-height ratio relates waist circumference to body height, so it describes central fat storage independently of how tall you are.
Short answer
The waist-height ratio places waist circumference in the context of your build, and you can work it out at home. The threshold around 0.5 is practical orientation, not a diagnosis — and it matters whether the circumference came from an estimate or a tape.
What the value represents
It comes from dividing waist circumference by height in the same units, so it is a number without a unit.
The advantage over waist circumference alone is obvious: 90 cm at the waist means something different in someone 160 cm tall than in someone 190 cm tall. The ratio accounts for that difference.
The rule of thumb that goes with it: keep your waist smaller than half your height. That corresponds to a value of 0.5.
The input waist circumference on InBody 970 is an estimate from body composition rather than a tape measurement unless the Yscope module is attached. That carries into the ratio.

- A value just above and just below the threshold are not two different situations. A difference in the second decimal place sits within the uncertainty of an estimated circumference.

Waist circumference grows with body dimensions, so the same value means a different degree of central storage in people of different build. Dividing by height removes that influence much as BMI does for weight. For the resulting ratio the manual gives abdominal obesity thresholds of above 0.5 in men and above 0.51 in women; it does not state the reason for the difference between sexes.
On InBody 970 the numerator is an estimate rather than a measurement without the Yscope module, so the ratio inherits both the uncertainty of the body composition estimate and a modelling assumption about trunk geometry. Measuring the circumference with a tape gives you a ratio that is directly computable and more stable between measurements. This is one of the few cases where a home measurement has the edge over the device.
The WHO expert report treats waist circumference and the waist-hip ratio as indicators of fat distribution, and the UK NICE guidance recommends adding waist circumference to BMI in adults with a BMI below 35. In every case it is one input into a broader assessment combining several pieces of information — which the device does not have.
