Waist circumference from InBody is an estimate rather than a measurement without the Yscope module. Treat it as orientation and add your own tape measurement — waist circumference is among the best indicators to follow between visits.
What the value represents
Waist circumference is the simplest indicator of how much fat is stored around the trunk. That is exactly why it appears in preventive guidance more often than more complicated values.
A crucial detail: InBody 970 does not measure the waist. It estimates it from the body composition analysis. With the Yscope module attached, a genuinely measured value is shown instead of the estimate.
The device number can therefore differ from what a tape measure shows. Both are worth having, but they are not interchangeable figures.
A circumference cannot separate visceral fat from subcutaneous fat. Both sit inside the same circumference.

On top of the uncertainty of the composition estimate itself, a modelling assumption about body geometry is added. With Yscope attached the situation changes. The module measures abdominal impedance and circumference separately, and the manufacturer catalogue reports a coefficient of determination R² of 0.982 between waist circumference from Yscope and tape measurement. For a setup without Yscope no corresponding correlation is published, and the catalogue explicitly states that results can differ without the module.
Standardising where the measurement is taken is essential for waist circumference. Why does the device show a different waist from the one I measured with a tape?
Because without the Yscope module it does not measure the waist but estimates it from body composition. A difference of several centimetres is therefore not an error. For following development, keep the two series separately.
What waist circumference is fine?
The manual gives no reference range for waist circumference itself. It works with derived ratios: a waist-height ratio above 0.5 in men and above 0.51 in women, and a waist-hip ratio of 0.90 or above in men and 0.85 or above in women, are what it labels abdominal obesity.
