What the value represents
Protein is one of the four components InBody divides body weight into. According to the manual it makes up 12 to 15 percent of body composition and consists of nitrogen-containing organic matter — the building material of muscle, skin, bone, teeth, hair, blood and the immune system.
The value on the result sheet is in kilograms and describes the protein contained in your body, above all in muscle tissue. It is not a dietary figure. How much protein you eat in a day is something the device neither knows nor can find out.
That distinction matters for the written evaluation on the sheet too. The manual states explicitly that protein deficiency on the result sheet means an insufficient amount of protein forming muscle mass, not an insufficient intake of protein from food.

How the value is produced

- Protein is also the second component of body cell mass. The manual defines body cell mass as intracellular water plus protein.
- The reference range in brackets next to the value is a comparison against a reference; the manual does not publish the formula for it.
- Because the whole calculation rests on an estimate of body water from impedance, protein shares the same sensitivity to hydration as the other components.
How to read the current value
- The manual states that protein makes up 12 to 15 percent of body composition. Read your own value against the reference range in brackets, though, because that one is derived from your build.
- A value below the reference range is not a diagnosis. It means the device estimated less protein tissue than the reference for your build implies — most often, therefore, less muscle mass.
- Protein moves almost in step with muscle mass. If one comes out low while the other sits within range, check the measurement conditions and hydration status.
- Absolute kilograms cannot be compared between people. A taller and more muscular person naturally carries more protein.
How to read change over time
- The protein component changes slowly. Differences between measurements days apart reflect measurement conditions rather than a real change in tissue.
- A rise in protein together with a rise in muscle mass and intracellular water is the expected picture during sustained strength training.
- A fall in protein during weight reduction signals that the loss did not come from fat alone. Confirm it against skeletal muscle mass and fat mass from the same measurement.
- A meaningful horizon for tracking is several months. Abrupt changes between two visits usually have an explanation other than a genuine change in protein tissue.

- Increasing dietary protein does not show up in this value directly. It shows up only through any resulting gain in muscle tissue, over months.
What can affect the result short term
- Hydration status, because the whole model starts from an estimate of body water.
- Training shortly before the measurement, which changes fluid distribution.
- Food and drink before the measurement. The manual recommends measuring fasted.
- Time of day and body position before the measurement.
- The menstrual cycle, during which body water fluctuates.
What to do next
- Treat protein as a companion to muscle mass rather than a standalone indicator. Both values describe the same tissue from different sides.
- If you are losing weight, watch whether protein holds steady. A fall alongside falling muscle mass means the loss is coming from muscle too.
- Take questions about diet and protein intake to a nutrition professional or a doctor. They cannot be read from this value.
- If the value stays below the reference range and is accompanied by weight loss, weakness or fatigue, discuss it with a doctor.
What the value does not determine
- It does not establish dietary protein intake.
- It does not replace laboratory assessment of nutritional status.
- It does not diagnose malnutrition or any other condition.
- The calculation is not published by the manufacturer.
- It is not among the parameters validated against DEXA in the manufacturer internal study.

InBody uses a molecular four-component model in which weight consists of water, protein, minerals and fat. Bioimpedance directly measures only the electrical properties of tissues and derives the volume of body water from them; protein is a calculated component in that chain. The manual gives neither an equation nor input quantities for it, so the value cannot be independently recalculated or verified — which matters when judging its accuracy.
The physiological basis for the link between water and protein is that cellular protein mass and intracellular water go together. The manual uses this in the other direction too when it defines body cell mass as intracellular water plus protein and recommends it as a nutritional indicator precisely where fat free mass would be distorted by excess extracellular water.
The main limitation follows from the same chain. The ESPEN clinical guidelines on bioimpedance warn that body composition estimates are sensitive to altered fluid distribution; for protein that sensitivity appears exactly as it does for muscle mass, because both come from the same input. The internal validation study by the manufacturer, moreover, compared only fat free mass, fat mass and segmental lean mass against the DEXA reference method — the protein component is not among the validated parameters.

Does this value tell me whether I eat enough protein?
No. The manual rules that out explicitly: the value describes the protein component of your body, mainly in muscle. Dietary protein intake cannot be read from it and the device does not know it.
