Body Fat Mass is the amount of fat in kilograms — an absolute figure, unlike percent body fat, which is only a share of weight.
Short answer
Fat mass is the number of kilograms of fat and is easier to read than the percentage while losing weight, because it does not swing with muscle mass. It is calculated as a residual after subtracting fat free mass, though, which makes it the value most disturbed by measurement conditions.

What the value represents
Fat mass tells you how many kilograms of your weight are fat. That is different information from percent body fat, which is a share and moves even when you do not touch the fat at all and simply add muscle.
According to the manual it covers the total amount of lipids extractable from adipose tissue and from other tissues. The manual distinguishes two ways of dividing it: into subcutaneous and visceral fat by location, and into essential and storage fat by role.
Essential fat is what forms part of bone marrow, the heart, lungs, liver, spleen, kidneys, intestines, muscle and central nervous system tissue. It is not an energy reserve but a structural and functional component. Storage fat is adipose tissue serving as an energy reserve.

How the value is produced
- A calculated value, and a residual one: fat mass = measured weight − estimated fat free mass.
- Fat free mass is derived from total body water measured by impedance, assuming water makes up roughly 73 percent of fat free mass.
- An important property follows: fat is never measured directly. Anything that shifts the estimate of body water or the measured weight propagates straight into fat mass.
- Percent body fat is a step further downstream: fat mass ÷ weight × 100.
- The reference range in brackets is a comparison against a reference; the manual does not publish the formula for it.
How to read the current value
- Always read fat mass together with percent body fat and weight. On its own it does not say whether the amount is high or low for your build.
- The manual gives a reference percent body fat of 15 percent for adult men and 23 percent for adult women, with a recommended range of 10 to 20 percent for men and 18 to 28 percent for women. It gives no reference value for fat mass in kilograms — the sheet instead shows an individual range in brackets.
- In the Muscle-Fat Analysis the sheet compares the length of three bars: weight, skeletal muscle mass and fat mass, with length relative to ideal weight. The manual does not give numeric boundaries for the Under, Normal and Over bands in this section.
- The manual also gives health context: it associates excess fat with a higher risk of hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, arteriosclerosis, fatty liver, diabetes and cancer, and insufficient fat with depression, feeling cold or infertility. The measurement itself establishes none of these states.
How to read change over time
- A change in fat mass in kilograms is a more direct indicator during weight reduction than percent body fat. The percentage moves even when only muscle mass changed.
- When weight falls and fat mass falls by roughly the same amount, the loss is coming predominantly from fat. When weight falls markedly faster than fat mass, something else is going too — check muscle mass and body water.
- A difference of a few tenths of a kilogram between two measurements is not a reliable signal. Because fat is calculated as a residual, fluctuation in hydration propagates into it.
- A meaningful interval for tracking fat loss is four to eight weeks under comparable conditions, not a few days.

- Percent Body Fat – the share that complements the absolute value.
- Weight – without it a change in fat mass cannot be placed properly.
- Skeletal Muscle Mass – shows whether weight loss came from fat or from muscle as well.
- Fat Mass Index (FMI) – relates fat to height, so it does not swing with changes in muscle mass.
- Visceral Fat Area and segmental fat – add the distribution information that total fat mass does not carry.
- Weight, fat and muscle control – the recommendation derived precisely from fat and muscle mass.
Common misunderstandings
- Fat mass is not percent body fat. The same percentage in two people of different weight means a different amount of fat in kilograms.
- Zero fat is neither a goal nor a possibility. The manual describes essential fat as part of organs, bone marrow and nerve tissue.
- The value does not say where the fat is stored. Subcutaneous and visceral fat have different context and are addressed by other indicators.
- Fat is not measured directly. It arises as a difference, so the uncertainty of the fat free mass estimate feeds into it.
- The manual does describe associations with disease, but those are population associations, not the result of your measurement.
What can affect the result short term
- Hydration status. Because fat is calculated as a residual, every deviation in the estimate of body water shifts it.
- Food and drink shortly before the measurement. The manual recommends measuring fasted, because stomach contents count towards both weight and composition.
- A full bladder. The manual notes that water in the bladder is not counted by the measurement, which leads to overstated fat mass.
- Training, sauna and showering before the measurement.
- Time of day and the menstrual cycle.
- Clothing and objects on the body, because they enter the measured weight.
What to do next
The explanation of the value is the same for everyone. Only the suggested step changes — pick whichever fits you.
- During weight reduction, follow fat mass in kilograms as the main indicator and percent body fat as a companion. The absolute figure is easier to read while losing weight.
- Always open muscle mass alongside fat mass. The difference between losing weight and losing muscle lives right there.
- Fix a measurement routine: morning, fasted, after using the toilet, without training or sauna beforehand. Conditions show up in fat mass more than in any other value.
- If the health risk tied to fat distribution interests you, follow Visceral Fat Area and waist circumference rather than total fat mass.
What the value does not determine
- It does not diagnose obesity or any disease.
- It cannot separate subcutaneous from visceral fat.
- It is calculated as a residual, so the uncertainty of the fat free mass estimate feeds into it.
- Absolute values are not interchangeable with DEXA results or with other devices.
- It cannot establish whether a change came from a real loss of fat or from a change in hydration.
On terminology
- The manufacturer speaks of a recommended range, not of a normal value.
- Essential fat, according to the manual, is not an energy reserve but part of organs and nerve tissue. It cannot be reduced the way storage fat can.
When to discuss it with a professional
Rapid unintended loss of fat mass, and equally a marked and unexplained gain, belong with a doctor. The measurement cannot establish the cause.

In the InBody molecular model, weight = total body water + protein + minerals + body fat mass, with the first three making up fat free mass. Fat mass is therefore not calculated from a signal of its own but as the difference between the weighed value and the estimated fat free mass. It is a residual quantity into which every deviation of the preceding steps accumulates.
The practical consequence is asymmetric sensitivity to measurement conditions. When the estimate of body water shifts, for example because of dehydration after training, the estimate of fat free mass shifts and the entire difference appears in fat mass. The ESPEN clinical guidelines on bioimpedance therefore name altered fluid distribution as a situation in which body composition estimates are less reliable, and the manufacturer manual independently recommends measuring fasted, after using the toilet, and without prior exercise or sauna.
The manufacturer internal validation study from 2019 to 2020 compared InBody 970 with DEXA in 150 people and reported a correlation of r = 0.986 for fat mass (R² = 0.972, SEE 0.5770 kg). High correlation is not the same as agreement of absolute values, though: mean fat mass came out at 21.5 ± 10.1 kg on DEXA and 20.0 ± 10.0 kg on InBody 970, somewhat lower. The study is moreover an internal manufacturer validation in a Korean population aged 19 to 73. The device is therefore suited to tracking change over time rather than establishing an absolute amount of fat as a clinical figure.

Should I follow fat in kilograms or percent body fat?
During weight reduction fat in kilograms is easier to read, because it does not change merely because muscle mass changed. Percent body fat is useful for placing that amount in the context of your weight. Reading both side by side is best.

The manual gives no reference value for fat mass in kilograms — it works with a reference percent body fat of 15 percent for men and 23 percent for women. On your result sheet you will find an individual range in brackets next to the value.
Why did my fat mass jump by a kilogram between two measurements?
