What the value represents
The definition in the manual is unambiguous: soft lean mass = fat free mass − bone mineral content. In other words it is everything except fat and except the mineral component of bone. The manual also puts it the other way round, as the sum of total body water, protein and non-bone minerals.
The name invites a misreading. Soft lean mass is not only muscle — the value covers all of your body water, organs and other soft non-fat tissue.
The manual explicitly flags the difference from skeletal muscle mass: soft lean mass is not the same thing as skeletal muscle. It nowhere gives the relationship between the two values, though, so they cannot be converted into one another.

How the value is produced
- A calculated value under the relationship SLM = fat free mass − bone mineral content.
- Fat free mass itself arises as the sum of body water, protein and minerals derived from impedance. Bone minerals are an estimate calibrated against DEXA.
- It follows that the uncertainty of two different steps feeds into soft lean mass: the estimate of body water and the estimate of bone minerals.
- Because it contains all of the body water, it is one of the values on the sheet most sensitive to hydration.
- The reference range in brackets is a comparison against a reference; the manual does not publish the formula for it.
How to read the current value
- Read the value against the reference range in brackets. Absolute kilograms cannot be compared between people.
- The difference between fat free mass and soft lean mass equals the bone mineral estimate. In an adult that is a relatively small part of the whole.
- If muscle is what interests you, read skeletal muscle mass. Soft lean mass is a broader category and the manual separates the two.
- A high value alongside a raised ECW/TBW ratio may be shifted by retained fluid, because all of the body water is part of it.
How to read change over time
- It responds fast. Because it contains all of the body water, every change in hydration propagates into it in full.
- A rise over months alongside a rise in muscle mass, protein and intracellular water corresponds to a real gain in tissue.
- An abrupt change between two visits is almost always explainable by measurement conditions rather than by tissue gained or lost.
- During weight reduction, watch whether soft lean mass falls only slightly. A marked fall together with muscle mass means the loss is coming from active tissue too.

- A higher value does not automatically mean more muscle. It may mean more water.

What can affect the result short term
- Hydration status, because the value contains all of the body water.
- Carbohydrate and salt intake over the preceding days, which affect the amount of retained water.
- Training, sauna and showering shortly before the measurement.
- Food and drink before the measurement; the manual recommends measuring fasted.
- Time of day, body position before the measurement and the menstrual cycle.
What to do next
- If you are following muscle, use skeletal muscle mass. Soft lean mass is not built for that.
- Use it as supplementary information about the volume of soft non-fat tissue and always read it alongside body water.
- Measure under the same conditions. Of all values on the sheet it is among the most sensitive to hydration.
- When the value changes unexpectedly, check the ECW/TBW ratio and total body water first.

- It is not identical to skeletal muscle mass; the manual gives no relationship between the two.
- It contains all of the body water, so it reacts strongly to hydration.
- It does not measure muscle strength or function.

The manual defines three layers of non-fat tissue that differ in what has been taken out. Fat free mass is the sum of body water, protein and minerals. Soft lean mass arises from it by subtracting bone minerals, so it contains water, protein and non-bone minerals. Skeletal muscle mass is then a separate value — and this is exactly where the manual goes quiet.
The table of contents promises a chapter on the relationship between muscle mass and soft lean mass, but the text describes only soft lean mass. Neither the relationship between skeletal muscle mass and soft lean mass nor an equation for skeletal muscle mass appears anywhere in the documentation. That means the two values cannot be converted into one another, and it cannot be verified what fraction of soft lean mass skeletal muscle represents.
A concrete rule follows for interpretation. Soft lean mass is usable as a description of the volume of soft non-fat tissue and as a check against fat free mass, but not as an indicator of muscle mass. The ESPEN clinical guidelines on bioimpedance add that estimates of lean tissue are sensitive to altered fluid distribution — and soft lean mass contains all of the body water, so that sensitivity applies to it in full.

What is the difference between SLM and skeletal muscle mass?
Soft lean mass is fat free mass without bone minerals, so it includes all of the body water and organs. Skeletal muscle mass is only the muscle you control voluntarily. The manual separates the two explicitly, but gives neither the relationship between them nor an equation for muscle mass — which is why they cannot be converted into one another.
Why is SLM lower than fat free mass?
Because it subtracts bone mineral content from fat free mass. The gap between the two values on your sheet corresponds exactly to the bone mineral estimate.
Can SLM tell me whether I am gaining muscle?
Not reliably. The value contains all of the body water, so it also rises with simple fluid retention. For tracking muscle use skeletal muscle mass and follow it over months.
