Segmental Fat Analysis
Segmental fat shows how much fat mass falls to the right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg and left leg — in kilograms and as a percentage of the reference value for that segment.
Short answer
Segmental fat is chiefly information about distribution, not a classification. The percentages are multiples of a reference, not shares of segment weight, so values above 100 percent are ordinary. Sides are read from the point of view of your body, and a difference between them is an observation, not a finding.
What the value represents
Total fat mass tells you how much fat you carry altogether. Segmental fat analysis divides it into five parts of the body, so the distribution becomes visible. The manual gives a single purpose for it: checking whether fat is distributed evenly.
Right and left are always given from the point of view of the person being measured, not the observer. Right leg on the result sheet is your right leg, even though the silhouette shows it on the left. Without this, people routinely swap sides and then compare something other than what they think.
Each segment carries two numbers. The kilograms are the amount of fat in that segment. The percentage is a comparison against the reference value for that segment, where 100 percent is the reference point. The percentage here is therefore not the share of fat in the weight of the segment — which is exactly why it often looks unusually high.
A figure of 250 percent does not mean the segment is 250 percent fat (that would make no sense). It means the segment holds roughly two and a half times the reference amount of fat. Likewise 200 percent is twice the reference.
- The fat mass in a given segment, in kilograms.
- The same amount expressed as a percentage of the reference value for that segment, where 100 percent is the reference point.
- The distribution of fat across five segments — right arm, left arm, trunk, right leg and left leg from the point of view of the person being measured.
- It does not represent visceral fat. The trunk value covers subcutaneous and more deeply stored fat together, but the amount of visceral fat cannot be read from it — Visceral Fat Area serves that purpose.
How the value is produced
- The measured part: the impedance of each of the five segments, which the whole calculation starts from.
- The calculated part: the fat mass of the segment. It arises in a similar way to total fat mass — water and lean mass are derived from impedance and fat remains as the residual. The manual gives no equation for the segmental split.
- The reference comparison: the percentage. It relates the kilograms to the ideal value for that segment, not to the weight of the segment or to total fat.
- A derived sum: fat in the arms and legs is added together on the Visceral Fat Result Sheet as Arm/Leg Fat, that is limb fat excluding the trunk.
- Weight is the only directly measured quantity in the whole chain; everything else is derived or calculated.
How to read the current value
- Sort out the sides first. Right arm and right leg are yours, not the ones on the right of the picture.
- Read the percentage as a multiple of the reference, not as a share. A value of 100 percent equals the reference value for the segment, 200 percent is twice that.
- Read the kilograms and the percentage together. Arms and legs carry far less fat in absolute terms than the trunk, so the kilograms alone cannot be compared between segments.
- The manual publishes no bands or thresholds for segmental fat. It states only that the percentage compares a segment with its ideal value. Do not import thresholds from other sources, and treat the value as a description of distribution rather than a classification.
- A difference between the right and left side is an observation about fat distribution, not a diagnosis of oedema, inflammation or disease. The device does not establish such states.
- A high trunk value does not automatically mean high visceral fat. The trunk includes subcutaneous fat of the chest, abdomen and back. For the question of how much fat surrounds your organs, Visceral Fat Area is the value to use.
How to read change over time
- In practice segmental fat moves mainly alongside total fat mass. When total fat falls, the segments usually fall too — not necessarily at the same rate.
- Compare the same segment under comparable conditions. The body composition estimate is sensitive to hydration, the last meal and recent exertion.
- A meaningful horizon is weeks to months. A difference between two measurements a few days apart reflects the measurement conditions rather than a real change in fat.
- Falling fat in a segment while lean mass in the same segment holds or grows is a different situation from both falling together. That is why the two values are read side by side.
- For subcutaneous fat the manual warns that it cannot be reduced in the short term and that a long-term approach is needed. The same applies to what you will see in the segmental values.

What to read it with
- Segmental lean mass in the same segment – shows whether the volume of an arm or leg is lean tissue or fat.
- Total fat mass – the context the segments add up to.
- Percent Body Fat – the share of total weight that the segmental values do not carry.
- Visceral Fat Area – the only indicator that separates fat around the organs from subcutaneous fat; the trunk value does not answer this.
- Estimated body circumferences – add a sense of shape and volume that the kilograms alone do not give.
Common misunderstandings
- Sides are read from the point of view of the person being measured. Your left leg appears on the right of the silhouette.
- The percentage is not the share of fat in the weight of the segment. A value above 100 percent is ordinary and means a multiple of the reference value.
- Trunk fat is not visceral fat. It covers subcutaneous and more deeply stored fat together.
- A difference between sides is not a diagnosis. The device does not establish oedema, inflammation or disease.
- Exercising a particular area does not remove fat from that segment specifically. The manual describes no such method and fat distribution is individual.
- Kilograms cannot be compared directly between segments. The trunk naturally holds far more fat than an arm.
What can affect the result short term
- Hydration — fat is calculated as the residual after subtracting lean mass, so a deviation in the water estimate propagates into fat.
- Food and drink shortly before the measurement.
- Training shortly beforehand, which changes perfusion and fluid distribution in the loaded segments.
- Time of day and the shift of water towards the lower half of the body during the day.
- Room temperature outside the recommended 20 to 25 °C, showering or sauna before the measurement.
- Stance during the measurement and the quality of electrode contact — these show up most in the segmental values.
- The menstrual cycle, during which fluid retention fluctuates.
What to do next
- Confirm the sides before you start comparing left with right.
- Read the kilograms and the percentage together, and add segmental lean mass from the same segment.
- For tracking fat loss, use total fat mass as the main indicator and the segments as supplementary information about distribution.
- When fat around the organs is what interests you, open Visceral Fat Area rather than the trunk value.
- Repeat measurements under the same conditions weeks apart rather than days, and decide from the trend.

- It does not diagnose oedema, inflammation or disease; a difference between sides is an observation.

Bioimpedance does not measure fat. It measures the resistance and reactance of tissues to alternating current, body water is derived from those and lean mass from water; fat appears as the difference between weight and lean mass. In segmental analysis the same principle is applied to individual segments, because the device measures the impedance of five body parts separately. The manufacturer does not publish the equation for the segmental split of fat, so the value cannot be independently recalculated or verified.
The main source of uncertainty follows from that. The NIH consensus statement on bioimpedance emphasises standardised measurement conditions as a precondition for comparing repeated results, and the ESPEN clinical guidelines name altered fluid distribution as a situation in which body composition estimates from bioimpedance are less reliable. Because fat is calculated as a residual, the imprecision of the water and lean mass estimates carries into it in full — and in a single segment of small absolute mass, such as an arm, the same absolute deviation shows up relatively more strongly than in the whole body.
For segmental fat the manual gives the units (kilograms and a percentage of the ideal value for the segment) and the purpose (checking evenness of distribution), but publishes no numeric bands or thresholds by which a segment would be classified. The manufacturer internal validation study against DEXA moreover covered whole-body fat and fat free mass and segmental lean mass; segmental fat was not verified in it. Segmental fat values are therefore best read as a description of distribution and as a basis for following a trend, not as a classification result.
Fat in the arms and legs is summed on the Visceral Fat Result Sheet as Arm/Leg Fat, that is limb fat excluding the trunk, which sits in the weight breakdown alongside subcutaneous, visceral and non-abdominal fat. The trunk value from segmental analysis is therefore not the same as visceral fat: it covers the subcutaneous layer of the chest, abdomen and back together with more deeply stored fat. Separating abdominal fat into subcutaneous and visceral components is what the dedicated parameters are for, and visceral fat is an estimate of an area according to the manual, with CT remaining its gold standard.

Why does my arm show 285 % fat? That cannot be right.
It can, because it is a different kind of percentage from the one you expect. The value compares the fat in a segment with its reference value, where 100 percent is the reference point. A figure of 285 percent therefore means roughly 2.85 times the reference, not that the arm is 285 percent fat.
Is trunk fat the same as visceral fat?
No. The trunk value covers subcutaneous fat of the chest, abdomen and back together with more deeply stored fat. For fat around the organs, Visceral Fat Area is the value to use, which the manual describes as an estimate of an area — CT is the gold standard for measuring it.
Can I lose fat from one specific area?
The manual describes no method for targeted fat loss in a single segment, and fat distribution differs between people. In practice segmental values move mainly alongside total fat mass. For subcutaneous fat the manual explicitly warns that it cannot be reduced in the short term.
I have more fat in one leg than the other. Is that a problem?
